Scott L. Baker, MD, FACS, FASCRS


Dr. Scott Baker is Board Certified in General Surgery and Board Certified in Colon & Rectal Surgery.  He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  

Dr. Baker earned a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science from St. Cloud State University. He went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and then completed his General Surgery Residency at the Guthrie Clinic/Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania.  

Dr. Baker furthered his education by completing a Fellowship in Colon & Rectal Surgery at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.  He then obtained Board Certification in that specialization as well.

Professional Memberships

Dr. Baker is an active member of the South Dakota State Medical Association (SDSMA), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). In addition, he currently serves as Chief of Surgery for Avera McKennan Hospital and as Medical Director of the Avera McKennan Digestive Disease Institute.  In the past, he has served in many roles for Avera McKennan Hospital including Chairman of the Department of Surgery and as a Member of the Board of Trustees.  He has also served as the South Dakota Chairman of the Committee on Trauma for the American College of Surgeons.

Teaching Experience

Dr. Baker holds an academic appointment from the University of South Dakota as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery and is active in the education of medical students and residents. He is also an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor.

Special Interests

Dr. Baker has a special interest in all areas of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.  He specializes in colon and rectal surgery to include benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus.  Other interests include endoscopy, surgical oncology, gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, and trauma care.


Dr. Baker and his wife Carla have two sons.  He enjoys running, bicycling, hockey, and spending time with his family.
