Dr. Bradley C. Thaemert

Dr. Bradley C. Thaemert, MD, FACS


Bradley C. Thaemert, MD, FACS is Board Certified in General Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons and the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.  Dr. Thaemert serves as the South Dakota Chairman of the Committee on Trauma for the American College of Surgeons.  He has also served as the past Chairman of the Department of Surgery as well as a member of the Board of Trustees at Avera McKennan Hospital.


Dr. Thaemert attended the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and completed his residency in General Surgery at Gunderson Medical Foundation-Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He received his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Teaching Experience

Dr. Thaemert is an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor and is active in the education of medical students and residents. He holds an academic appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor from the University of South Dakota.

Special Interests

Dr. Thaemert has special interest in Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), endoscopic overstitch procedures, robotics, and other minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures.  Other interests include general surgery; general thoracic surgery; trauma care; abdominal surgery; gastrointestinal surgery; surgical oncology including sentinel lymph node biopsies; endoscopy; thyroid surgery; sclerotherapy; and obesity surgery including gastric bypass, gastric band, gastric balloon, and the sleeve gastrectomy procedures. He has special training in gastric bypass surgery, gastric balloon placement and removal, and the LINX surgery for acid reflux.


Dr. Thaemert and his wife Jana have three daughters and they enjoy family vacations, skiing, and biking.
