Michael A. Person, MD, FACS
Dr. Michael Person is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and completed his General Surgery Residency at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Physics from Augustana University.
Dr. Person is an active member of the South Dakota State Medical Association (SDSMA), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS). He currently serves as the Medical Director for the Avera McKennan Trauma Service and is the South Dakota Vice Chairman of the Committee on Trauma for the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Person holds an academic appointment from the University of South Dakota as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and is active in the education of medical students and residents. He serves as the USD School of Medicine Surgery Clerkship Director as well as the Surgery Coordinating Committee Member for the Avera McKennan Hospital campus. Dr. Person is also an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor.
Dr. Person has a special interest in all areas of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery including robotic assisted techniques. His interests include general surgery, complex hernia repair, trauma/critical care and surgeries/biopsies of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, colon, gallbladder, liver, thyroid, parathyroid, and skin. In addition, Dr. Person has special interest in the surgical treatment of the pancreas.
Dr. Person and his wife Rachel have five children. He enjoys golf and spending time with his family.
