DONALD J. WINGERT, MD, FACS

CREDENTIALS

Dr. Donald Wingert is Board Certified in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Wingert graduated third in his class from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and completed his General Surgery Residency at Kansas University serving as a resident instructor for Gross Anatomy.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS

Dr. Wingert is an active member of the South Dakota State Medical Association (SDSMA), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Society of General Surgeons (ASGS), the Northern Plains Vascular Society (NPVS), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the Seventh District Medical Society, and Alpha Omega Alpha. In addition, Dr. Wingert has served in many roles at Avera McKennan Hospital including Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Member of the Board of Trustees. He has also served as the South Dakota Chairman of the Committee on Trauma for the American College of Surgeons.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Dr. Wingert holds an academic appointment from the University of South Dakota as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery and is active in the education of medical students and residents. He is also an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor.

SPECIAL INTERESTS

Dr. Wingert has special interest in surgical critical care; laparoscopic procedures; sclerotherapy; trauma care; general thoracic surgery; gastrointestinal surgery; stereotactic breast procedures; surgical oncology including sentinel lymph node biopsies; endoscopy; thyroid surgery; and hyperbaric oxygen treatment. He is also interested in breast disease and treatment for varicose vein disease.

FAMILY

Dr. Wingert and his wife Jane have two sons and they enjoy family vacations, Twins baseball, and hunting.
