ORBERA™ Intragastric Balloon

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

The ORBERA™ intragastric balloon is a new FDA approved incision-less, non-surgical weight loss option.  The balloon is placed into the stomach through the mouth using an endoscope while the patient is under mild sedation.  Once in the stomach, the balloon is filled with saline through a self-sealing valve until about the size of a grapefruit.  The procedure typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes and the patient can generally go home the same day.

Once the balloon is in place, it occupies space in the stomach, which limits the amount of food that can be consumed at one time, leading to reduced food intake and weight loss.   In addition, patients receive an individually tailored 12 month support program to help them stay motivated and overcome barriers in reaching long-term weight loss goals.

After six months, the balloon is removed during another outpatient endoscopy procedure.

BENEFITS OF THE PROCEDURE

Unlike bariatric surgery, intragastric balloon insertion is a minimally invasive procedure that does not permanently change your anatomy.   There are no incisions or general anesthesia.
The balloon is shown to be superior to diet & exercise alone, with patients losing three times more weight than with a traditional diet and exercise program.

Weight loss is rapid, with the majority of weight loss typically occurring in the first three months.

RISKS OF THE PROCEDURE

As with any procedure there are risks involved. Risks related specifically to intragastric balloon placement include the possibility of balloon erosion and the inability of the body to tolerate the balloon. Proper consumption of foods and following your doctor's orders may help reduce your chance of an unwanted complication.
